Tweaking Standard NinjaTrader Indicators

Back to the Basics   Whether you are starting out in the trading game or a veteran trader, finding and honing the best tools of the trade (technical indicators) is always important. Choose wisely and you’ve built a solid foundation for success in daytrading. Choose poorly and predators will be lining up, ready to take you out at every turn. Most novices follow the herd when building their first trading screens, grabbing a stack of canned indicators and stuffing as many as possible under the price bars of their favorite instruments. This more is better approach short circuits signal production because it looks at the market from too many angles at once. It’s ironic because indicators work best when they simplify analysis, cutting through the noise and providing usable output on trend, momentum and timing. Choosing the right technical indicators is daunting but can be managed if traders focus on the less is more principle. Once You have your core set of effective indicators, then y

Dealing with Despicable Markets

Recently, we have experienced some of the most horrendous, horrific forex markets I have traded ..ever.  I have been flooded with a range of emails as a result.  Some people are now doubting their system(s), while others are doubting that forex is even a valid market to trade.  The emails though that touch me the most out of this recent slew, are people about to give up on trading altogether because of the recent struggles. Most of these people in the latter group are new to trading, have heard great things about trading forex, and took the plunge.  They are blaming themselves, the trading system, time of day they can trade, etc for the shortcomings of a bad market.  Many think that their experience since starting trading is how the market is always, and their dreams of success seem to just vaporize in front of them along with their trading accounts. The reality is that markets are absolutely cyclical, and have periods of greatness and periods of weakness.  Even with the best sy

Should you have a Dedicated Office for your Day Trading activities? One of the most attractive parts of running your own business is avoiding all the expenses that go with having to rent office space. Many of the jobs that people work these days are ones that allow them to work from their homes over the Internet, and day trading is no different. If you re a day trader, however, there still may be some value for you in leasing office space. It will simply depend upon your preferences and your disposition. Healthy Space To Learn Trading For some people, working from home is made more difficult because they don t own a very large space. Perhaps you rent a small apartment or your house isn t that big. This can make it difficult for you to get away from your work enough to get proper rest. Trading Options Using a Diversified Trading System

Guest Post from Michael Filighera  Using Diversified Trading Systems (DTS) for equity options markets can produce strong results.  Trading equity options can be used to add “beta” to an existing trade or as “the” trading vehicle. There are several concepts that are necessary to understand prior to trading options based on DTS trading signals. Definitions Call option – is an option contract in which the holder (buyer) has the right (but not the obligation) to buy a specified quantity of a security (underlying) at a specified price (strike price) within a fixed period of time (expiration). The writer (seller) of a call option has the obligation to sell the security (underlying) at a specified price (strike price) if the option is exercised.  The writer (seller) is paid a premium for taking the associated risk with the obligation. What does a Winning Day Trading System look like?

A Good Day Trading System Can Help Boost Your Trading Profitability It might seem obvious that the best day trading system encourages you to buy low and sell high. Alternatively, if you are in the market shorting stocks or futures then you need to sell them high and cover the short by securing it at a lower price. The basics of these two strategies are simple enough however, how you achieve this goal will define you as a success or failure in day trading. The action of buying and selling stocks and futures is easy enough. Although, buying at the right price and selling for profit is much harder. Without an effective day trading strategy many day traders simply go broke. They understand the buying and selling part, they just do not understand the entering and exiting part. Any day trader new to the industry will quickly see that prices tend to jump all over, making him or her unsure of exactly when to exit. Often times they choose the most devastating moment to exit, generating a great

What Brad Pitt Taught Me About Trading

Moneyball (2011) is a bio-sports-movie about Billy Beane, played by Brad Pitt, the manager of the Oakland A’s baseball team and his struggles to put together a competent team while working with a severely limited budget. The movie is well done and worth watching (even if you’re not a baseball fan), but it’s the subject of the movie that I think is relevant to traders. If you’ve seen the movie you know that Beane (Pitt) attempts to resolve the problem of finding quality players by leaving the old school scouting model and embracing a new philosophy. Through his new criteria he picks up “budget” players which other teams have overlooked, but he hopes will perform well on the field. Without giving away the movie I’ll tell you that the focus of player selection comes down to finding players who are consistently able to get on base. Get on base and you have a chance to score. This is a perfect analogy for what traders need to do to become profitable as well. While it is fun t

The number of things that can effect the market are nearly unlimited. The other day I changed the cat food and I swear I saw it register on soy beans the next day. All kidding aside, as traders we want to be in the know for the many things that can push the market one direction or another. But more importantly, we want to know what effects the market in a predictable way. Is there such a thing? Over time we can track data, and if it produces the same results, we can describe this with higher probability.   One of these happens to be Seasons. This can be a factor of the stock pr commodity itself, dependent upon it s availability and / or the demand at that time of year or it might be a factor of weather, growing season, holidays, and such anything that is seasonal. Like everything else, this data can been tracked and traders can use it to profit on what the market has shown to do during a particular season. Learn how to be a Self-Directed Retail Day Trader

Non Professionals Can Learn Day Trading Some people discover day trading and know immediately that this is how they want to make their living. Other people look at the various day trading tools available, find them interesting and see something they might like to do on occasion, but which they would never want to do as their main means of making a living. In the world of day trading, there is definitely room for both types of people. Choosing Between Day Trading Futures or Stocks The commodities markets and the stock markets are both very popular with day traders. If you re interested in exploring futures trading systems, you may find that you ve given yourself a great way to enjoy the thrill of making some money on those days when work is slow and when you just want to do something constructive that s a bit off the beaten path for you. Make sure that you learn all about day trading futures before you jump in, however. These markets can be very volatile and, just as there are opportun

Treating Your Trading Business Seriously

There is a Psychology to taking your part time business seriously. Are you running a trading business or is this just a VERY expensive hobby? I personally challenge you to REALLY answer this question and be HONEST with yourself. All too often I speak with other traders who have a full time job and try to trade and what I hear is astounding. The bottom line of what I hear is that there is no plan, no set method, no trading rules and sometimes no clue as to what they are trying to accomplish or where they are going with their trading. This IS a recipe for disaster and it seldom if ever will ever work out. Who ever heard of ANY business succeeding that did not have a solid plan in place? Challenge number 1. Time! Let’s face it, if you are trying to work full time, manage a family and manage a life, this can be difficult but not impossible. I suggest picking a few days a week that come rain or shine, is the time you devote to your trading business. If you set out to trade for three hour

What is Depth of Market and how can it Help You?

In doing research, I have been able to build a good “resource” base from which to pull trading strategies.  Having solid “market awareness” gives an edge as to which trade strategy to employ, which at times is to stand aside and not trade. It is a constantly changing learning process.  Technology has replaced trading pits with servers and high-speed connections routing orders from all over the world.  All major exchanges are now electronic.  Some continue to operate open out cry trading pits, such as the CME and CBOE, and CBOT in a ‘side-by-side’ fashion with electronic trading.  Electronic trading though, continues to execute the bulk of daily volumes. The past several years has seen global consolidation amongst exchanges.   The CME bought the NYMEX/COMEX, CBOT, and LIFFE.  ARCA bought the Pacific Options Exchange and then was purchased by the NYSE.  The AMEX sold to the NYSE, which then merged with Euronext N.V. to become NYSE Euronext, Inc.  NASDAQ bought th

The World’s Best Indicator

Did you know there is an amazing indicator out there that will help improve your trading? One that will help you gain more profit and lessen your losses. One that will give you consistent results and help you “pull the trigger” when it’s time to take the trade. One that can turn you into a money making machine. Yes, it’s true, yet most people don’t know about it. What is it? Read on. If you’re like most traders your charts look something like this: And my first question is always “how can you make a decision with all that on your chart?” Of course the answer is you can’t. There is too much information on the chart, much of it conflicting, making it nearly impossible to make any decision at all. Why am I telling you this? Wasn’t I supposed to tell you which indicator does work? Okay, here it is: the World’s Best Indicator is the one that helps you make a decision. Feel cheated? Don’t. There’s more to this than you realize. You see all indicators work, to a deg

Coaching and Training: The Keys to Day Trading Success

Ah trading…..why is it so easy?  Yeah right!  I don’t know if you’re like me or not, but this profession did not come easy to me, not easy at all.  If you’ve ever heard that saying “You need to break a lot of eggs to make an omelet”…..well sometimes, with trading, it seems like you have to blow up an egg delivery truck just to succeed.  Why is day trading ANY market so challenging?  Is it your system?  Is it your money management?  Or, and this is a biggie, maybe we need to ask for help from a professional coach. I had these 3 rotten Aspen trees in my yard at my old house, where I live it gets VERY windy and you guessed it, one of the trees came down!  The tree that fell on its own fell between a 3 foot space between my fence and my brand new A/C unit.  Phew, I lucked out; it missed the unit by inches!   “I better get those out of there”. With the help of a friend and the easy chain saw rental from a hardware store I was ready to get those trees outa’ t
